Ordinary high-speed steel
Ordinary high-speed steel can meet the general demand. There are two common types of ordinary high-speed steel, tungsten based high-speed steel and tungsten molybdenum based high-speed steel.
Tungsten based high-speed steel: The typical grade is W18Cr4V, with a heat treatment hardness of 63-66HRC, a bending strength of 3500MPa, and good grindability.
Tungsten molybdenum high-speed steel: The typical grade is W6Mo5Cr4V2, which is currently replacing tungsten high-speed steel. It has a series of advantages such as fine and uniform distribution of carbides, high wear resistance, and low cost. The heat treatment hardness is the same as above, the bending strength reaches 4700MPa, and the toughness and thermoplasticity are 50% higher than W18Cr4V. Commonly used in manufacturing various tools such as drill bits, milling cutters, taps, reamers, cutters, gear cutters, etc., it can meet the requirements of general engineering materials. However, its decarbonization sensitivity is slightly stronger.
Another grade of ordinary high-speed steel is W9Mo3Cr4V, which is a new variety developed in China in recent years. The strength and thermoplastic properties are higher than W6Mo5Cr4V2, with a hardness of HRC63-64, which matches the toughness. It is easy to roll and forge, with a wide range of heat treatment processes, low decarburization sensitivity, and lower cost. These three grades of ordinary high-speed steel are respectively W18 and 16.5% in the market; w6，69％; w9，11％ 
Cobalt high-speed steel: The grades include W2Mo9Cr4VCo8 (American grade M42). Its characteristics include low vanadium content (1%) and high cobalt content (8%). Cobalt can promote better dissolution of carbides in the matrix during quenching and heating, and improve wear resistance by utilizing high matrix hardness. This high-speed steel has good hardness, thermal hardening, wear resistance, and grindability. The heat treatment hardness can reach 67-70HPC, but special heat treatment methods are also used to obtain a hardness of 67-68HRC, which improves its cutting performance (especially intermittent cutting) and enhances its impact toughness. Cobalt high-speed steel can be used to make various cutting tools, which have good cutting effects on difficult to machine materials. Due to its good grinding performance, it can be made into complex cutting tools and is widely used internationally. But China lacks cobalt resources, and the price of cobalt high-speed steel is expensive, about 5-8 times that of ordinary high-speed steel. Only high-speed steel containing 2% or more cobalt is called high-performance high-speed steel. The code name is HSS-E.
